Yeats Day Events June 13th, Sligo

William Butler Yeats is an name of international renown and this year, on June 13th, the poet’s birthday, events are happening all over the world including Tokyo, Sacramento, Taipei to London.

Here in Sligo, one of Yeat’s favourite places in the world,  his ‘Land of Heart’s Desire’ we’re celebrating his birthday in style!

A whole host of events and competitions will span the day across Sligo this Friday all organised by the Sligo Yeats Society and we’ve got them all here for you to check out!

Here’s Just a selection of events happening on Friday 13th:

Family Events:

10.30am The World Wishes Yeats Happy Birthday-  Yeats Day Mail Art Project:An exhibition of small art works of birthday wishes from around the world, at City Hall, Quay St.

11am Mad Hatters Happy Birthday with the Yeats Society – Family fun, drama and poetry.Yeats Memorial Building, Hyde Bridge

2.30pm – 6.00pm Happy Birthday Mr Yeats – Birthday cake, music and butterflies join the SÓ Sligo Food Festival Food Village in Stephen’s Street Car Park for birthday celebrations. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann young musicians will join the festivities.


8am Breakfast on Lough Gill –  A boat trip across Lough Gill to the Lake Isle of Inisfree casts off Yeats Day with music, poetry and breakfast on board.Meet at Doorly Park Pier.Tickets €25. Booking essential.Email: Tel: 087 2598869

5pm Hazeleood Poetry Walk – Join Hazelwood Heritage Society for a guided walk with stories and Yeats’ poetry. Meet at Hazelwood Car Park

5.30pm LillyLolly Carft Fest Opening –  LilyLolly Craftfest opening by Mayor Marcella McGarry andMary Whelan, DCCOI at Hyde Bridge Gallery,Yeats Memorial Building, Hyde, Bridge


12.30pm Yeats Choral at the Library –  Children from Eily Kilgannon School of Drama and AnneCarton Creche perform Yeats’ poetry at the County Library’s garden stage, Stephen St.

7.30pm Blue Raincoat Theatre Company and Hawkswell Theatre –  Sandra O’Malley and Niall Henry read Yeats poetry and prose, accompanied by music.Hawk’s Well Theatre,Temple St. Tickets at door €5

9.00pm Magic Music at Dusk – Musicians Felip Carbonell, Ian Bordley and Ray Coen will mark the end of Yeats Day in the beautiful 13th centuryDominican Friary, Sligo Abbey,Abbey Street.
